Today is World Sight Day; an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October each year.

The aim of World Sight Day is to:

  • Raise awareness of blindness and visual impairments
  • Educate the public on how they can prevent blindness or loss of sight
  • Influence government bodies and health officials to participate in and generate funds for blindness prevention initiatives

At iSightCornwall we take eye health care very seriously.  Below we have listed our top 5 tips for maintaining proper eye health:

Stop smoking

Smoking increases your chances of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

For support on how to stop smoking contact the free NHS helpline on 0300 123 1044 or visit the NHS Stop Smoking website.

Get moving

Research has shown that exercising may help reduce the risk of sight loss which can occur due to high blood pressure, diabetes and the narrowing and tightening of the arteries.

To help you get moving there are many exciting clubs and activities on offer in Cornwall. To find out what clubs and activities are available in your area please visit the Clubs & Activities section of our website.

Eat healthily

Maintaining a balanced diet will benefit your overall health and may help keep your eyes healthy.

The following foods are recommended for improving eye health:

  • Carrots (there’s no surprise there!)
  • Kale & spinach
  • Oysters
  • Apricots
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Eggs

Drink within the recommended limits

Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of early age-related macular degeneration. Sticking to the recommended daily alcohol limits could help to reduce this risk. Government guidelines encourage to drink less 6 medium glasses of wine or 6 pints of beer.

Protect your eyes from the sun

Wearing a hat or sunglasses with a high level of UV protection with help protect your eyes from UV rays.

At the Sight Centre we have a range of filters and solar shields designed to block out UV rays and prevent glare. These are available a free long-term loan basis from our Low Vision Clinic if you have received a referral from your Optician or Consultant.
