He did it! Craig Hancock has completed a solo bike ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in a bid to raise £2,000 for our Sight Appeal.
It took Craig just 10 days to cycle the 913 miles from coast to coast. Not even a couple of punctures or a few wrong turns along the way could deter him. Craig was joined by friends for the last leg of the journey and his family were waiting at Land’s End to welcome him home.
Both of Craig’s children Harry, aged 8, and Lottie, 5, have Nystagmus, a condition that causes involuntary eye movements. iSightCornwall provided Craig’s son with an electronic magnifier through its Inspiring Futures fund to help him at school. And it was this positive impact that inspired Craig to take on the mammoth challenge.
“iSightCornwall has supported my family so much, so I wanted to give something back with the bike challenge,” said Craig, who only took up cycling as a hobby two years ago.
“It’s taken a few days for the achievement to sink in. I want to say a massive thanks to the Kernow Leg Spinners for joining me on the last leg, to everyone that was there at the finish line to welcome me home and for all the messages of support throughout the trip that helped to spur me on.”
Terri Rosnau-Ward, Chief Executive of iSightCornwall, said: “We’re thrilled that Craig took on this iconic challenge to raise money for our Sight Appeal. We rely on donations to provide our essential services and this year we’re aiming to raise £50,000 to offer further support for local people living with sight loss. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Craig and all of his supporters for helping us on our way to achieving this.”
