Newquay Golf Club’s Outgoing Seniors Captain took a swing at raising money for iSightCornwall and has raised more than £950.

Dermot O’Callaghan has been the driving force behind Newquay Golf Club’s Seniors team throughout a difficult time of lockdowns, social distancing, and face masks but he still managed to use his time as Seniors Captain to raise money for a good cause.

Dermot chose to support iSightCornwall as his charity of the year as they are one of Cornwall’s oldest charities and provide support and a range of services to people with sight loss across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The Outgoing Captain said: “I chose iSightCornwall because I myself have sight loss. When I was a child, I got an infection in my right eye which later became worse and left me blind in that eye. But it’s never affected what I can do, I still play a good standard of pool, football and now golf.

“There is hope for people who have sight loss, and I know how much the little things can make a difference, so I wanted to support iSightCornwall and all that they do.”

Despite most of the club’s fundraising events being cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions, Dermot still managed to raise a fantastic £952 for the sight loss charity thanks to the generous support of the members of Newquay Golf Club and from the local community.

Dermot said: “It was a difficult time for fundraising, our charity days couldn’t happen and there were no friendlies but we did manage to have a successful Burns Night celebration and I also received support from Steve and his customers at the Quintrell Inn who managed to raise £62 so I would like to say a big thank you to them as well as all of the members of Newquay Seniors and all who supported me.”

Chief Executive from iSightCornwall, Carole Theobald recently met with Dermot at the club to accept the cheque.

Carole said: “We would like to say thank you to Dermot and all of his supporters. All of the money raised in Cornwall stays in Cornwall and will help us to give support to people with sight loss.

“This includes organising clubs to help people stay active and social, providing services such as benefits advice and assistive technology demonstrations and hosting clinics across the county.”

Dermot is hoping to raise more for iSightCornwall in the future as he looks to take the reigns as Club Captain of Newquay Golf Club in the upcoming year.
